We emphasize this activity as unique in the world, which is carried out in Torrevieja from the 19th century.

It has been transmitted always from generation to generation and appears as emblem of the city. The ships curdled in salt are presented in acts of relevancy and great personalities.

It is typical form of development. The model is done by wood and cotton fabric in order that the salt is impregnated perfectly, and this framework gets in the lagoon of the salt for some days in the epoch of better become set, at the beginning of June. Later it is extracted of the water and is left to dry to the Sun, and it takes that white colour so characteristic. Inside the urns of crystal, perfectly protected, it can remain in indefinite time.

Torrevieja’s salt mines possess a quality also very peculiar: in its moment of major crystallization some desiccation does not take place, with which its groundwater level continues being kept equal along all the year round, being able introduce therefore in it any model for its set.

The interest for not to lose this tradition, what are maintaining the students of public college Immaculate, who for several years, in collaboration with The Council of Culture, and for the disinterested labour in some of their teachers, it calls an annual contest of crafts of the salt, in which each student in their last year realizes their own boat of salt.

Callosa de Segura is a city with an economy based on industry and agriculture, thanks to its fertile garden. The most outstanding industry is the manufacture of thread, ropes and nets (inheritance of the traditional manufacturing of hemp) that make Callosa as the first national producer of networks and thread; it is also important footwear. The agriculture, of irrigation, takes up most of the land and their products more achieved are the vegetables, wheat, cotton and citrus.

Callosa is considered proud of their origins as the capital of hemp. It was center of a powerful industry of thread, ropes and nets that comes from the Middle Ages. This industry placed to Callosa in the modernity of networks and strings, first with natural fibres and later with their conversion through the treatment of new materials.

The School of hemp, declared also well of ethnographic the Valencian Community by the Valencian Council of Culture promotes together with the Town Hall of Callosa courses of learning in order to teach these offices that already do not exist, to create a rejuvenated new staff that coexists with the older monitors and could take part with them in the demonstrations, which each time they are more demanded inside and outside Callosa, -Let’s remember the outstanding participation and demonstration which took Callosa at the fair Spannabis in Barcelona in 2006, going this way where it is necessary to have one of our better cultural manifestations. The attractiveness of these courses are the interesting experiences that entails, or simply by the taste of learning to make your own shoes, a good network for the rest, or the sport, or your own threads and strings, with natural materials and ancestral methods.

The tuna fishing with rod and reel is a hard and really exciting sport. But we must recognize the merit of the type of professional fishing.

The handcrafted fishing of the tuna has been gradually losing in Torrevieja, where only occasionally took one from the dragnet when they were fishing the sardine and also by means of fishing lines floating dedicated to the swordfish.

In 1.990, two vessels sporting "Illusion" and "Chambel" started in the Sailing Club of Torrevieja fishing for giant tuna with rod and reel. Until two years after the "Chambel" does not land, the first tuna fished in Torrevieja. Shortly after Jose, master of "Illusion" brings to the docks of Torrevieja R.C.N a precious specimen of 340 Kg.

Nowadays it is a costly and uneconomic work, only continue exercising it a few families. The process in order that the palm becomes white in the palm is approximately one year. When Holy Week passes, already one starts tying palms for the following year.

The white palm grows covered, protected from the solar light, for what it lacks the natural green colour of the plants exposed to the Sun. For it, there realizes the operation so called “encaporuchado” that has several phases: the tie, the formation of the hood covering the palms with some plastic (Formerly covered with dry palms), and, finally, the hood it puts on the top.

A palm that tied ride one year can throw: three white palms with the green top that they are named 'entrefinas'; and ten or twelve total palms, which are named “palms of first " and are those who are in use in processions. Also they throw four or five palms of approximately 2, 5 meters, which are called “palms of second ", and four or five “palms of third ". Finally, the heart of the palm can throw one or two palms.

When one year has happened are picked up, are selected and are cleaned by a brush. Later they get to a raft with water and with hypochlorite to take from them all the impurities that have, and after this we preserve them in chambers with water in the soil, and use flower of sulphur (burnt sulphur) in order that they do not get damaged. As soon as they are extracted of the chamber, the palms are cut to measure. Only three families stay in Orihuela, and some craftsmen more in Callosa, Cox and Redován.

Also, with the palm of palmetto and a cane river dry, are being developed mainly in Albatera, San Isidro and Catral, the brooms of an excellent quality for gardens, doors, etc.

Ceramics

The handcrafted production of the Vega Baja is very diverse. One of the principal branches is the ceramics introduced by the Arabs, which has two very widespread specialities: the earthenware jug and the manufacture of pitchers, saucepan and jars of ceramic.
