Mayor Street of Daya Vieja

Daya Vieja's origins get lost in the time so the first written documents that we know that make reference to our town date back from the Low Middle Ages, when the King Alfonso X of Castile with the aid of his son-in-law the King Jaime I of Aragon conquered it. Already then it was a small Arabic farm-house that later was donated to the Castilian noble Fernán Perez de Guzmán.

Several royal letters refer to this small town that in those days was much more extensive and which name was "Lo Daya" forming a single term with the neighbouring village of Daya Nueva.

According to Juan Bautista Vilar, in 1411, our village was formed by a fortified mansion, residence of the Lord, a Christian village of 12 families, apart some widows, elders and young people with own house, and a Mudejar mosque. Also there existed a small Parochial Church, patronage of the Lord.

In the 17th century it was granted to D. Jaume Masquefa the Baron's title of the Daya; pertaining to nobility title that is still in force nowadays and that D. Carlos Dolz and Dña. Ana Cardenal hold. The history of our town is also linked to the title of the Counts of Pinohermoso, who were owners of the same one for several centuries, and that were possessing a Palace in the urban hull (at present destroyed).

After the earthquake of 1829 that had destroyed the region, Daya Vieja was reconstructed, to be inaugurated and blessed on October 12, 1857.
